The official seat of power throughout all of Japan, Chiyoda serves as the occupational residence for the Imperial Family and much of the country's most important legislative and executive ministries and offices, including the National Diet Building.

Part of Tokyo's original downtown core before the wards were reconsolidated, Chūō retains the honor of being the city's historical center of commercial activity, challenged only by Shinjuku in this regard. It continues to be a popular area for upscale shopping.

A special ward of Tokyo cradled by the Sumida River to the east and the Arakawa River to the west, it is made predominately of reclaimed marshlands that have been filled in and developed over the course of many years.

The most modernized fragment of Tokyo's old-fashioned commercial hub, it also expresses strong cultural divisions on account of its geographical area distribution and the glaring fiscal line between zones. Several embassies and business corporations are seated in this ward.

A booming administrative and commercial hub that houses the seat of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. It has been a crucial secondary center of activity since the end of World War II, rivaled only by the districts of Ginza and Marunouchi in this regard.

Translating as "East Plateau", it is the smallest of Tokyo's 23 special wards in terms of land area, as well as the third-smallest by population. During the Edo period it was once the venue of the prominent Yoshiwara red-light district, and vestiges of its former past can still be seen.

A ward that has its origins as a suburban agricultural district before the construction of railway lines during the Meiji and Taishō eras allowed it to grow and develop into the thriving entertainment strip it is today. Japan's most popular variety of cherry blossom was cultivated here.
